Legendary British glam rockers produce a true Christmas rock classic
By Alex Baker
In the United States, British glitter rockers Slade were best known for producing stomping glam rock hits like “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” and the original version of “Cum on Feel the Noize.”
However in Britain, where glam rock dominated the charts in the early Seventies, the band are much more of an institution and their 1973 hit “Merry Xmas Everybody” sold more than a million copies when it was first released.
Like the band, the song has become something of a UK institution and it was actually voted the most popular Christmas song in England in a 2007 poll.
Check out this classic clip of the band performing the song on Top of the Pops.
We especially dig bassist Jim Lea‘s Gibson Flying V bass. And we’d gladly give a candy cane to anyone who can tell us what that crazy looking axe lead guitarist Dave Hill is playing is!
As the song says, “Merry Xmas Everybody” from all of us here at Guitar Shop TV!
