The 1.5-mile section of Sunset Boulevard that runs from Havenhurst Drive in West Hollywood to Sierra Drive in Beverly Hills is famously known the world over as the Sunset Strip. The area became one of the most iconic streets in the country for music during the 1960s when it was home to landmark venues like the Whiskey A Go-Go, Pandora’s Box, and the Roxy.
Back then bands such as the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Love, Frank Zappa, and the Seeds ruled the Strip. However much like New York’s Time Square, the Strip became a sleazy, downtrodden shadow of itself in the ’70s.
It was during the ’80s that the Sunset Strip reemerged as a musical Mecca when it served as the epicenter for the hair metal scene that spawned bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Quiet Riot, and Guns N Roses.
For the past five years the annual Sunset Strip Music Festival has celebrated the Strip’s vital musical legacy. The three day festival that takes place on a massive outdoor stage on the Strip itself, and inside some of the street’s most iconic venues.
This year’s festival is set to run between August 16th-18th and features headliners that include Bad Religion, Marilyn Manson, The Offspring, and De La Soul. The festival organizers have also decided to pay a homage to the Strip’s musical forefathers this time round by honoring the Doors with a special tribute
