This video starts off with Prince having a moment all guitarists can relate to – stopping and re-starting a song because one’s tone ain’t quite right. It’s fun to see and doesn’t stop him from launching into a super-tight version of “Guitar,” from his 2007 album Planet Earth.
Shot on a small stage, this is a more intimate look than we usually get at Prince in performance, down to clear views of his pedal board, which is set up in a semi-circle around his mic stand. He gets into some Hendrix-style wah-wah playing near the end of the tune.
Prince is one of the greatest talents in pop music. The Minneapolis-based funkster created his own record label and recording studio, Paisley Park, where he has made ten platinum albums. He’s won seven Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the first year he was eligible. He’s listed his greatest guitar influences as Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana.
