Pete Townshend Storms Offstage on Who Tour Opening Night

Veteran guitarist walks offstage during the encore of The Who’s tour opener

No sooner had the Who embarked upon the latest edition of their Quadrophenia Tour, when the old specter of the ‘Orrible Oo’ suddenly reared its ugly head.

The veteran English rock band were in the middle of playing “You Better You Bet” during an encore last night in Florida. The guitarist had reportedly been looking unhappy with the monitor situation onstage. At one point he yelled “Too loud,” before ultimately storming off without telling his bandmates.

The band not only finished the song without him but also completed a Townshend-less version of “Baba O’Riley” before finally closing the show.

Townshend has had a well-publicized battle with hearing loss and can perhaps be forgiven for being understandably sensitive about protecting his ears, while trying to carry on in a group that once made it into the Guinness Book of Records for being the world’s loudest.
