Nirvana: “Heart Shaped Box” – The Director’s Cut

Influential Seattle grunge outfit releases director’s cut of “Heart Shaped Box” video

A director’s cut has surfaced online of Nirvana’s 1993 video for “Heart Shaped Box.” The video was one of the most ambitious produced by the Seattle grunge trio and was directed by Anton Corbijn.

The arty, colorful video is loaded with the kind of faux disturbing imagery that would become all-too-prevalent in videos from Nineties alt-rockers. Nonetheless, it does provide a compelling backdrop of imagery for what is still one of the best tracks off Nirvana’s 1993 release In Utero. And Kurt Cobain is at his angstful best as he scowls for the camera, backed up by Krist Novoselic and future Foo Fighter Dave Grohl.

The director’s cut of “Heart Shaped Box” will be included on the 20th anniversary commemorative version of In Utero, which is set to be released on September 23rd. The album was the final full length studio release from the trio, which disbanded following Cobain’s suicide in 1994.
