Holiday Playlist: Christmas with Johnny Cash

Christmas with Johnny Cash features Christmas songs recorded by the Man in Black between 1962 and 1980

Johnny Cash recorded many Christmas songs throughout his 50+ year career in the music business. Many of the best of them are included in this excellent Christmas compilation from Sony Legacy.

Although the songs on Christmas with Johnny Cash were all recorded between 1962 and 1980, the album was actually released around the time of Cash’s untimely death in 2003.

Cash lends his own distinct depth and dignity to classics like “Oh Come all Ye Faithful,” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” tracks that like most of what’s included on the album, were previously released over the years. However some of the best moments on Christmas with Johnny Cash are the tracks that more spoken than sung.

On “Christmas as We Knew It” Cash spins a heart-rending tale of what Christmas was like for him growing up in rural Alabama, with his family being thankful for what little they had. Cash delivers the tale accompanied by nothing more than the occasional guitar strum and some vibes in the background.

Here’s a nice clip of Johnny and June Carter Cash performing one of the tracks from the album “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” in 1977.

Christmas with Johnny Cash was number 15 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 25 Greatest Christmas Albums of All Time and is available at fine music retailers everywhere, including Amazon.
