Gibson USA celebrates Golden Anniversary of boldly-styled bass beast
By Alex Baker
First introduced in 1963 as the bass counterpart to the Gibson Firebird guitar, the Gibson Thunderbird has been the weapon of choice for influential bass players like Motley Crue‘s Nikki Sixx, GNR’s Duff McKagan, and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. With its boldly-styled body and through-neck build, the Thunderbird is an instantly recognizable four-string icon.
Now Gibson USA is honoring this unique instrument’s Golden Anniversary with the release of the new 50th Anniversary Thunderbird Bass.
The 50th Anniversary model boasts the inimitable Thunderbird shape, a through-neck build, a three-point bridge, and a pair of T-Bird bass pickups. The highly-playable bass sports a Bullion Gold high-gloss lacquer finish and a pick guard emblazoned with the Thunderbird logo and “50th Anniversary 1963-2013.”
The bass’ neck and body are crafted from rugged multi-ply mahogany tone wood, yielding unparallelled strength and sustain. The versatile, contemporary T-Bird pickups have ceramic magnets for improved punch and clarity.
The bass comes in a 50th Anniversary case and is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
