The veteran punk rock singer/guitarist raised eyebrows and made headlines last Friday when he smashed his guitar and launched into an onstage rant at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas, shouting “I’m not f*cking Justin Bieber, you motherf*ckers,” when he was informed his band only had one minute left to play.
Smashing a guitar and insulting a pop star hardly seem beyond the pale from a punk group who have courted controversy at various times during their career. However this incident follows on the heels of the Grammy-winning, multimillion selling Berkeley-based band cancelling an appearance in Italy earlier this month when Armstrong was reported to have been suffering from “severe dehydration.”
Armstrong’s onstage outburst and admission into rehab come in advance of the band’s ambitious plans to release of a trio of new albums; their first since 2009. On Tuesday the band are scheduled to release the first of these Uno!, with Dos! and Tres! scheduled to be released in November and January.
Despite having entered into substance abuse treatment, Armstrong is also apparently set to go ahead with his appearance on NBC’s The Voice this week. Let’s just hope Christina Aguilera doesn’t try to cut him off short at any point!
