Habit To is an eclectic South African rock group that was formed in 2003. The band has a unique sound that draws on elements of reggae and new age music to form a kind of exotic conscious-rock. With appealing female singer/guitarist Chillie Stent out front, Habit To are already popular throughout South Africa and would seem to have what it takes to grow their popularity beyond their homeland. Experience the celebratory nature of Habit To for yourself with this video for “R10,40.”
Cincinnati pop-rockers the Upset Victory have a an energized presence and hooky original numbers that incorporate elements of punk, metal, and emo to come together into a very contemporary rock sound. With a photogenic front man, radio-friendly sonics, and a large social media following already in place, the Upset Victory could be a band to watch in the future. Check out this video for “Actions.”
At first glance Sandbox resemble a kind of LA version of the Decemberists. Like the Decemberists, they combine vintage tones with contemporary indie rock. However unlike the Decemberists, Sandbox incorporate elements of hip-hop and country into their songs. With a new album helmed by Silversun Pickups producer Dave Cooley, things are currently happening for Sandbox. The band’s retro-contemporary vibe is illustrated perfectly in this Video for “Everybody” in which prohibition meets young Hollywood and young Hollywood in turn, meets an elephant.
Pilot Touhill is a Los Angeles-based reggae rocker with a sound that’s nearly as distinct as his name. With his smooth blue-eyed reggae tenor and melodic original numbers that suggest a less punky version of Sublime, Pilot is already a huge favorite around LA and Orange County. Pilot Touhill definitely has charisma and a sound that could be considered radio-friendly. Check it out for yourself with this disarmingly charming video for “Good Morning.”
