Without further ado, here are our April finalists:
Joe and the Jungle
Joe and the Jungle are an LA-based rock group that are a favorite around town, thanks to blistering live sets at venues like the Key Club and the House of Blues. The band’s music is a righteous cacophony of classic rock influences like Zeppelin, Floyd and the Beatles crossbred with the contemporary rock sounds of bands like Muse and the White Stripes. The resulting sound is one that is at once familiar and yet fresh. Get a load of Joe and the Jungle’s contemporary take on rock classicism in this clip of them performing live at LA’s infamous Viper Room:
The Steepwater Band
Fronted by formidable singer/guitarist Jeff Massey, the Steepwater Band are a Chicago rock outfit that have steered their Delta Blues influences into some darkly psychedelic musical territory. Originally formed in 1998, the TSB have refined their rootsy sound through more than a decade of touring. Averaging around 125 shows a year, the band have appeared with acts that include Buddy Guy, Wilco, ZZ Top, Cheap Trick and the Drive By Truckers among others. Check out this moody B&W video clip for the band’s Lennon-on-a-bad-trip influenced blues-rocker, “Remember the Taker.”
Part outlaw country, part Southern rock, Swampdawamp are a heavy-hitting outfit from Nashville, TN. Led by charismatic frontman Gig Michaels, Swampdawamp is a true working class rock outfit that likes to party while also maintaining a social consciousness. Recently the band’s patented brand of “swamp rock” – a raw distillation of hard rock, blues, country, and rock – has been earning them fans across the pond courtesy of a promo Gig that the boys did for the Rugby Super League in the UK. Experience the swamp rock phenomenon yourself in this live clip of Swampdawamp performing their original song “Do Things.”
London ska-punk pop-rocker Mister Jack is a talented solo artist with a sound that harkens back to the two-tone ska sound popularized by groups like Madness and Bad Manner back in the early 1980s. Supported by a formidable backup band that includes former members of Squeeze, Jack’s campy, cockney cacophony of fun also incorporates contemporary musical vibes suggestive of groups like Audio Bullies and the Streets, along with the strong classic ska sound of bands like Madness, Toots & the Maytals and Desmond Dekker. Experience the musical madness of Mister Jack for yourself in this cheeky video clip for “Ain’t Gonna Let You Go.”
Russian-born Marina V is a singer/songwriter whose voice has been called “hauntingly beautiful” by the LA Times. Incorporating influences as disperse as the Beatles, Tori Amos and Tchaikovsky, Marina has cultivated a distinct piano-driven contemporary pop sound that would seem easily capable of taking the airwaves by storm. As a live act, Marina V has entertained audiences worldwide with appearances in Moscow, Sydney, Paris and around Los Angeles, where she is currently based. Watch the official video for Marina V’s original number “You Make Me Beautiful.”
Connecticut-based quartet Novus Dae are architects of a distinct hard rock sound that’s one part alt-metal and one part experimental fusion. The group has earned a regional following through extensive touring throughout New England and appearances in support of such acts as Taproot, Jet Black Stare and Three Days Grace among others. Currently Novus Dae are preparing to build on their regional success with a nationwide tour. In the meantime, check out the official video for “One Night’s Madness.”
